O'Donnell began competing in triathlons as a member of the United States Naval Academy triathlon team. He led the team to two us Triathlon Championships. Out of the Naval Academy, he continued achieving great success in the ITU circuit and winning several excel Ironman 70.3 races. 2009 was a year of banner as ' Donnell became the champion of the world 2009 ITU long course and was named the year USAT Triathlon. 2010 was another amazing year with a 2nd in the World Championships long ITU and 3rd place finish at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship.
